With the rise of the internet, internet access is quickly becoming something that you need in order to participate in society. Everywhere from the DMV to doctor’s offices are requiring online check-ins, online appointment scheduling, and more that can make lack of internet access painful for those that can’t afford it. These changes shouldn’t mean that low-income households have to spend their entire days at the library to have access to the internet.

So, can you get free internet with food stamps? The answer is yes and no. In this article, we will discuss the specific way that those on food stamps can access free internet.

How to Get Free Internet with Food Stamps

Remember how we said that the answer was yes and no? You can’t get internet directly with your food stamps, but being on food stamps means that you are likely eligible for another government program that can give you reduced-price internet. If you qualify for SNAP or are below the federal poverty line, you most likely qualify for the federal communication benefit known as the Affordable Connectivity Program.

The Affordable Connectivity Program, is a benefit that is issued by the federal government with the purpose of providing free or reduced-price internet. Because the internet is increasingly becoming a necessity, the program is proving useful for households all across the country.

Who Is Eligible for the Affordable Connectivity Program?

Families who received a Federal Pell Grant, are on SNAP, Medicaid, Public Housing, SSI, WIC, Veteran’s Pension, or Lifeline. However, these benefits do not mean that you are automatically enrolled in the program. You must separately apply for each program to ensure that you have been approved.

How Do You Access the Affordable Connectivity Program?

After submitting an application, you can enroll for the ACP through an approved provider. Through AffordableConnectivity.gov, you can find a list of providers that participate in the program and offer these government-assisted discounts for equal access to the internet.

Then, sign up with your provider and start saving money! The individual discounts may differ from provider to provider, but the ACP provides a monthly discount of $30 per month per household on internet.

What Else Do I Have Access To?

If you are eligible for SNAP and the ACP, you are also likely eligible for the Lifeline program. This government assistance program helps low-income families have access to reduced-price communication. Reduced cell phone bills are the primary goal of this benefit.

TracFone Wireless provides a Lifeline service, known as Safelink Wireless. It is an exclusive Lifeline wireless phone service provider. Through Safelink Wireless, you may be eligible for a free smartphone in addition to your reduced cell phone bill. Click here for more information!
